After starting Universal Servo Group in his garage in 2007, Larry Voss used his unique business strategy to propel forward and become an industry leader located right here in Dawson County.

Now in business for more than 13 years, and a staff of more than 20, Universal Servo Group specializes in repair, consulting and sales for automation and robotics. In their building tucked just off Highway 400 they service nationwide dealers including Eaton, Precise Automation, International Paper, Milacron, Greif and Sumitomo.

Voss attributes much of the company’s success to hiring top technicians rather than employing a large sales staff-a strategy many of his competitors use. “We always have more technicians than salespeople,” Voss said. “A lot of competitors are the other way around. Our quality is higher than our competitors—we have 26 years average experience which is the highest in the industry.”

Treating staff like family and promoting from within has also lent to the success at USG. “We are really big on family atmosphere here. We value that we bring in an eclectic group of people and we have a very diverse age group. We try to promote from within and send people for training.

That’s not just making the company good but preparing people for their future,” Voss said.

Voss and Universal Servo Group are also looking ahead into the future of robotics and have certified their staff to make repairs on COBOTS (collaborative robots) “This is something that we believe is going to grow faster than robots,” Voss said.

One of the top accolades of Universal Servo Group is being featured on the University of Georgia’s Bulldog 100 list—a list compiled each year by UGA to showcase the fastest growing business- es owned by university alumni.

“Universal Servo Group has proven they are a top ‘dawg’ in the robotics and repair industry,” Development Authority of Dawson County Economic Development Director Betsy McGriff said. “We are excited to see more and more industries like this choosing Dawson County to grow their business.
